Who we are
AJ Hyman was just a young boy with Chef Bobby Huber signed his work permit and he began sweeping the parking lot at Bobbywood after school. Bob saw something in him and it was only a month later that AJ was in the kitchen washing dishes and working pantry. Bob poured his knowledge into AJ and developed skills that would follow him throughout his life.
AJ's love of cars led him to John Bergstresser, who was a mechanic at a gas station where his mother worked. AJ begged John to work at the station so he could learn the art of mechanics. John became instrumental in shaping not only AJ's skill set, but also his giving heart.
These two men contributed to AJ's life in ways that he would remember always. He worked both jobs simultaneously, going to the gas station after school and to Bobbywood for the night shift. The next years were full of opportunities that they provided which gave AJ a glimpse into other worlds - worlds that he otherwise would not have known.
The Full Circle Project is a grassroots effort to impact the lives of children in the Hampton Roads area who live in under-served communities. This project was born from AJ's desire to invest in other children the way these two men invested in him. "They taught me to believe. They invested in me and I feel like I have the opportunity to give back to others," AJ says. What began as just a dream is a reality today. The Full Circle Project is in partnership with Norfolk Public Schools and provides opportunities for children to learn life and culinary skills through a one week summer camp in addition to eleven other experiences throughout the year that each focus on important life skills. These experiences range from learning about marketing and making radio commercials, learning about volunteerism and why it is important, to visiting and working on a farm to learn where their food comes from. They will also participate in team building activities during these months and will be introduced to financial fitness so that they can prosper once leaving home.
